Types of Pensions in Germany

Old-age pension
Is paid to citizens who have reached retirement age and have a sufficient insurance period. The retirement age in Germany is being gradually raised and is around 67 years.

Reduced earning capacity pension
This pension is intended for people who are no longer fully capable of working due to illness or disability.

Widow’s pension (survivor’s pension)
Is paid to spouses, children or other relatives who have lost their breadwinner.

Basic pension (Grundrente)
A minimum pension for people with low incomes to guarantee them a minimum standard of living in old age.

How to receive a pension?

Prepare documents
Collect all the necessary documents, including birth certificates, employment records, marriage and divorce certificates, as well as proof of your contributions and working hours.

Submit application
The application for a pension must be submitted to the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung). The application can be submitted in person, by post or online.

Wait for the decision
After you have submitted the application, the pension insurance will review your application and make a decision on granting the pension. This can usually take several months.

Payment of the pension
After your application has been approved, the pension will be transferred regularly to your bank account.
